What a strong response from our community!  120 people attended the community meeting held on Monday night at the Metropolitan Community Church of Northern Virginia in Fairfax City.  We know that many others wanted to be there but couldn't make the meeting.  And we know that even more across our community are beginning to feel the need to do something.

We had wonderful participation and strong statements against the amendment from Sen. Patsy Ticer, Sen. Janet Howell, Del. Brian Moran, Del. Adam Ebbin, Del. Jim Scott, Del. Vivian Watts, Del. Kris Amundson, Del. Chuck Caputo, Del. David Bulova, Del. Dave Marsden and Chairman Gerry Connolly.  We appreciate everything they and others did while in Richmond to stop this amendment, and we appreciate everything they're going to do through November to help us get the message out.

But this is our amendment fight.  This discriminatory language is aimed at our families.  We are the ones our opponents seek to permanently exclude from the most fundamental rights of all people:  Freedom, Security and Respect.

Now is the time to be involved.  If we don't stand up for ourselves, who's going to?

1) We need you to help:
There is a wide range of ways you can help.  We are currently looking for people willing to make phone calls, people willing to be at a community fairs smiling and handing out EF gifts, people willing to talk to other people about their lives, people willing to help us schedule/plan events and people who would like to donate money to support this work.  Please email volunteer@equalityfairfax.org for more information, visit our Volunteer page to see all of our volunteer opportunities and/or visit our Donate page to make a donation.

2) Ask your friends and family to pledge to vote against the amendment:
This amendment can be defeated only if we talk with people about our lives, and ask them to pledge to vote against it.  Working closely with the Commonwealth Coalition, we'll follow-up with these people prior to election day to remind them of their pledge and encourage them to get out and vote.  The whole effort comes down to the number of votes we get on election day.  So, print out copies of the VoteNoVA.org pledge form and get all of your friends, family, co-workers, doctors, etc. to sign it, then send it in to the Commonwealth Coalition (the address is on the form).

Attend a volunteer training:
Tuesday, May 23rd
6:30-7:00pm gathering time; 7:00pm-8:45pm volunteer training
Fairfax County Government Center
12000 Government Center Parkway
Fairfax, VA, 22035

We'll talk about what to expect and how to most effectively advocate for equality.
