Candidate Questionnaires – Delegate Primaries

June 8th, 2009 Sarah Gustafson No comments
June 9, 2009
6:00 amto7:00 pm
voteOn Tuesday, June 9th, the Democratic party’s primary will be held to decide the Democratic candidate for governor and lieutenant governor.

In addition, two Fairfax County districts have races to decide the Democratic candidate for delegate – the 35th and 38th districts.  The 35th district covers Vienna and part of Fairfax, while the 38th district covers parts of Falls Church, Annandale and Linconia.

Equality Fairfax sent a questionnaire to the candidates in these districts to ask them about their support of important GLBT issues. We’ve prepared a compilation of their opinions and comments to help you decide who best would represent you in your district – you can find it below.  Please make sure you vote!

Republican primaries were also called but no contests have resulted. Republicans will nominate their candidates for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general at a party convention.

Annual Picnic

July 19, 2009
12:00 pmto4:00 pm

picnic-table-150x1013

Another year, another picnic.  Spend an afternoon with Equality Fairfax at our 7th Annual Summer Picnic.

Got kids? bring em! Got a dog? Bring em! Got a partner/husband/wife/friend bring them too – everyone is welcome. Meet some new friends; touch base with some old ones that you may not have seen in a year.

When was the last time you played picnic games?  Watch the kids (or adults) try to run in the three legged race,  see who gets the wettest during the water balloon toss.

EF provides the buns, ketchup, chips, cookies,  potato salad and sodas/waters.  You bring your burger, chicken or veggie pattie.  And if you have a killer cole slaw, please feel free to bring along too.

The picnic area is very well shaded, so even if it really hot,  there’s a cool spot.  Park rules prohibit alcohol.

We’re in the covered pavilion,  just off the first right from the entrance road.  Look for the balloons!

Hope to see you at the picnic this summer!

images2Same-sex Parenting Discussion & Potluck

Join Equality Fairfax on Sunday, May 3rd for an interactive panel discussion regarding same-sex parenting.   The purpose of this informal discussion is to provide same-sex parents and parents-to-be with information on the available options for conceiving, parenting, and nurturing a family as well as some of the challenges faced by same-sex families. On hand will be same-sex parents to discuss their experiences as well as an attorney who works in a law practice that caters to same-sex families.

Come out and get your questions answered –  adoption vs. artificial insemination or surrogate?  How much does the process cost?  How long does it take?  What information should I know?  Can you adopt in VA?

We encourage same-sex parents to attend to share their experiences as well.

To accompany this lively discussion, bring your favorite dish to share with others.  Beverages will be provided.

And finally, we’ll take a few minutes to hold the annual EF member meeting to elect the Board of Directors.

Location:
Burke Library -  Meeting Room 116/117

Vermont and Iowa Join the Civilized World

April 7th, 2009 Linda Thomas No comments

gay marriageCongratulations to the citizens of Vermont and Iowa! Last week’s Iowa Supreme Court ruling and today’s vote in Vermont have brought great news to a community still a bit numb from the setback in California. The best part of today’s news is that the Vermont legislature was able to override a veto from the governor and that for the first time in America, a state has passed a marriage equality law without a court ruling.

New England has become the epicenter of marriage equality in America with Vermont joining Massachusetts and Connecticut. Six percent of the states now support marriage equality. That’s a small percentage but it’s double the three percent it was a week ago.

Virginia is still far behind these states legislatively, judicially and socially, but as the rest of the country sees that world really isn’t going to end because two men get married and that the sky won’t fall when two women say, “I do” then we’ll experience some climate change of a positive sort.

Congratulations to Iowa, Vermont, Connecticut and Massachusetts and thanks for blazing a trail for the rest of us to follow!

GLBT Men’s and Women’s World Soccer Championship Seeks Volunteers

April 1st, 2009 Equality Fairfax No comments

IGLFAThe Federal Triangles Soccer Club of Washington DC is looking for volunteers for this summer’s GLBT Men’s and Women’s World Soccer Championship.

In order to make this event, which attracts players from around the globe, a success, the Club needs the support of the DC volunteer community.

The need range from providing meals for a player to administration, translators, field monitors, events staff and people willing to house players from out of town during the week of the tournament. The Club receives many requests from players who would like to participate but can’t afford a hotel room in DC, so it’s asking men and women to consider opening their homes.

If you want to find out more about how you can help contact our volunteer coordinator Amanda Pyron volunteersiglfa2009@gmail.com or visit http://www.iglfa2009.org/
